Hanoi Opera House – A French’s architectural beauty in the heart of Hanoi

After the French finished their invasion of Vietnam, they began to build a system of government throughout the country. In 1901, the French colonialists started construction of the Hanoi Opera House. This is a project designed by two architects, Harlay and Broyer. It can be said that the image of Hanoi Opera House has become a cultural and architectural symbol of Hanoi capital. Visitors to the Opera House love to take unique commemorative photos here.

The Opera House is located at 01 Trang Tien Street, Hoan Kiem District. The Theater is located in the heart of the city with an extremely favorable location, convenient for transportation.

The premises of the Hanoi Opera House are quite large, with a total area of 2,600 square meters. The length of the Opera House is 87m, the width is 30m. The front of the Theater was built with many steps for the purpose of allowing the vehicles of colonial officials to visit on holidays. The Opera House is a work influenced by ancient Greek architecture, creating its own unique features.

The Hanoi Opera House has its own beauty and is not copied intact from any other work in the world. When you arrive at the Opera House, you will go through the steps, then to the lobby you will see a T-shaped staircase with a harmonious design that brings visitors to the seats. Inside the Opera House, there is a large stage and an auditorium that can accommodate nearly 900 people. Behind the theater is the administration room where actors use makeup, 2 singing practice rooms, a library, and a meeting room. The roof of the Opera House is covered with slate, glazed bricks and decorated with impressive reliefs of the Greeks. Just looking at it, we have the feeling that the Theater has the color of ancient Western architecture. But when closely observed, one can see that the Opera House has a clear blend of Asian culture.

The Hanoi Opera House has experienced many historical events, witnessed great national events, especially the August Revolution. Today, the Opera House is still intact, where important culture and art events of the capital take place. This is not only a unique architectural work but also contains profound historical and cultural values.
